3 Reasons to Get Dental Implants
We usually don't think about our teeth very much until our smiles are at stake. Beyond basic care and the occasional checkup with the dentist, our teeth are often neglected or deemed unimportant. If you have found yourself in a situation in which you must choose a way to save your smile, it may be important to consider getting dental implants. Implants, which are a long-term fix instead of a short-term one like removable bridges or dentures, come in 2 types: endosteal, which are screwed into the jawbone and subperiosteal, which are fixed under the gums but not screwed into the bone. Although it may seem dangerous or perhaps unnecessarily complicated, generally, the process is neither of those things. There are many reasons for people to choose implants. These 3 are the most common reasons.
Major Damage
For most types of tooth damage, such as cavities, chips, or cracks, less invasive procedures are sufficient. We can usually get crowns, caps, fillings, and the like for these problems. However, sometimes the damage is too major to be repaired with simpler techniques. If, for example, you've been in an accident of some kind and several of your teeth have fallen out, you will need to replace those teeth in order to protect your gums. For children or adults with small jaws, subperiosteal implants will work best to fix this damage. Everyone else should consider endosteal implants instead, as they are a little bit more stable in the long term. Either way, fastening replacement teeth inside the mouth instead of using removable ones will reduce problems with eating, talking, and physical exercise.
Severe Tooth Rot
When plaque builds up in the mouth, it makes tooth enamel porous. Eventually, these pores enlarge enough to merge together, and this is how cavities are formed. If left to grow, cavities can cause serious problems; they invite bacterial infections, which can spread to vital organs via the bloodstream, open the door to root decay, and weaken teeth enough to make them painful and useless. Root canals are available to remedy these problems. In some cases, however, root canals do not work. The problem may even grow due to the fact that root canals effectively leave the tooth unable to feel any pain from serious problems. Pulling out the rotted tooth and replacing it with an implant will help prevent that from happening to you.
Cosmetic Issues
Nobody wants to worry about their teeth ruining others' first impressions of them. In the United States, attractiveness can help determine who gets certain types of preferential treatment, and standards of attractiveness include teeth. We do not have to adhere to these standards, but they do increase our chances of getting hired, engaging in romantic relationships, and being considered for educational group activities or job promotions whether we want to admit it or not. If you feel that your smile is somehow substandard because of severe staining, multiple cracks, past damage, or misplaced teeth, you might benefit from replacing those teeth. You can, of course, use less permanent corrective methods, but using implants can help ensure that your smile will stay attractive for a long time.
